Haas 60A Drive Repair
When patience and determination pays off...
I'll be honest when the cover was removed off this Haas 60A servo amplifier, the first thought was "how soon can we get a replacement?" Components with their tops blown off, inner tracks blown and bubbled, IGBT blown to bits to name a few.
We wern't getting one quick, or cheap and this was the trigger to give this repair a shot as we had nothing to lose. The IGBT was not available from any standard UK suppliers but a great small business who we use often managed to find an alternative in stock which came next day. Big shout out to Bowers Semiconductors for yet again excellent service. We did some digging online and found very few photos to give us an idea of the damaged components, but luckilly after speaking to our customer he found the top off the switch mode IC on the floor of the control panel!
We replaced around 40 components on this, all the damaged firing stage components, all 6 optocouplers and 2 isolation amplifiers. We worked out where the blown inner layer tracks went to by cutting small holes in the board around the blown area, and remade these with wire temporarily for testing.
We powered up the drive before the IGBT was fitted (only crazy people would fit an IGBT before gate voltage testing) and the power supply came up first time, a red LED was seen which went green after a few seconds showing the unit was booting and healthy. We measured all the gate voltages and using voltage injection ensured each of the 6 stages transitioned. Finally the unit was serviced and the IGBT fitted.
What was an easy job to give up on paid dividends with a little perseverance.
Haas CNCs may have bespoke drives, but don't let that prevent you getting your equipment repaired. As seen here we always get great results.
